NetSnap FAQ's

The following are frequently asked questions on operating NetSnap:

  • Do I need a web page to view images coming from NetSnap ?

No you don't. NetSnap contains its own WebServer with pre-configured web pages. Simply point your browser to your NetSnap ID and see the images. The example pages supplied with NetSnap can be viewed by clicking here (this camera may not be up at all times).

  • My Internet provider assigns dynamic IP numbers, how do I find my NetSnap images ?

PeleSoft provides a complimentary lookup server through which NetSnap can announce your current IP number. Thus, you can keep your web pages constant, even though you may connect from different locations with different IP numbers. For busy sites (say more than 1 hit / minute) we strongly recommend you make arrangements with your ISP to obtain a permanent IP number. This will shorten delays to serve your camera images and it eliminates having to rely on the announcer service to be up and running.

  • How do I embed images from NetSnap in my web page ?

It depends on whether you use a constant IP number of if you use varying IP numbers. In the case of a varying IP number use the URL displayed in the About box of NetSnap. If you are using a constant IP number, simply refer to that IP number. The NetSnap online help contains various examples in the topic titled: "How to view images" under the "How to topics" list.

  • Can I use AOL to publish my web pages ?

Yes, you can. You must log in through the AOL browser in order to publish to your AOL web account, or to serve images via the NetSnap Web Server. Make sure you use the latest AOL browser for Windows 95 which provides the Winsock interface. If you wish to upload FTP images to a server other than the AOL FTP server, but going through an AOL dial-up connection, you may need to enable the "Firewall Mode" in the Services option page for the FTP settings under NetSnap.

  • What is the FTP service ?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is used to upload images to your web hosting service. NetSnap supports FTP uploading of images on a regular interval to your web host. If you do not have any web host, you can still serve camera images using the HTTP service provided by NetSnap.

  • What is the HTTP service ?

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol and is essentially the 'language' used by a Web-Server. NetSnap has a built in Web-Server, so you can host web pages containing camera images even if you do not have a permanent web site.

  • Can I use the scheduler on a permanent link to the Internet ?

Yes, you can have the scheduler start and stop NetSnap automatically, even if you have a permanent Internet connection.

  • What is a stream ?

A stream is a connection from the browser to the NetSnap server to transmit images. A connection may remain active for short amounts of times (the time it takes to send a single image) when static images are served, or it may remain active for longer periods during push-stream (self updating image) viewing.
